Life with Chopper: Chopper at 3 weeks

About Chopper

Chopper is a 3 year old Treeing Walker Coonhound who was discovered running along route 66. A kind soul picked him up (along with another stray) and brought him to help. Chopper ended up at the Arlington Animal Welfare League where they worked to begin socialization and medical care. When he first got there he was scared of everyone and every thing. He commando crawled, wouldn't approach anyone, and showed anxiety responses to being handled. The shelter got him neutered, dewormed and had surgery to remove fatty tumors. The staff took turns spending 20 minutes at a time just sitting in his run getting him acclimated to people.

He showed sparks of life when we met him--tossing around a plush toy outside, smelling and digging with excitement. He even came up to me at the end for a good scratching, looking me in the eyes. Not bad for a dog who commando crawled his way into the shelter.

Chopper needed to go to a home with another dog, a mature low keyed dog to make him feel safe. Our current dog had lost her companion the year before and needed someone else to keep her company, a low keyed dog that would not overwhelm her. And Greg and I needed another dog to melt our hearts.
